Not the most surprising headline you’ve ever seen.

When Adam Silver, commissioner, came out to the podium, we all knew the name he was about to announce. Ben Simmons was drafted No. 1 by the Sixers, the first top pick from LSU since Shaq was taken by the Magic in 1992. He also joins a group of eight No. 1 picks to come out of LSU.

“It’s been a great experience to coach such a special player and see his dream fulfilled on draft night being selected No. 1. I’m excited for Ben and his wonderful family along with our LSU program and great fans. The Philadelphia 76ers are in for a treat, said Johnny Jones. In his one and only year in Baton Rouge, Simmons won the Wayman Tisdale Award for the best freshman in the country.

He won SEC Freshman of the Year, and averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

“I’m happy to be part of the family now. It’s a weight off my chest. I’ve been looking forward to this day for a while, so I’m glad I’ve made history, not only for myself but my family and Australian basketball, said Simmons.

Although a weight has been lifted off his chest, a new one, perhaps heavier, will overtake as he tries to lead the Sixers out of a historic losing streak.
