It’s official. And it’s not the most surprising news you’ve ever gotten.

Ed Orgeron named fifth-year senior Danny Etling as LSU’s week 1 starter, but didn’t hesitate to say Myles Brennan was “a very close second” in the competition. “There were things [Myles] did beyond my expectations, but he’s still a freshman,” said Orgeron after Tuesday’s practice. Moreover, Brennan will be Etling’s backup.

Orgeron told the media he announced the starter for the team’s sake. “I wanted to make sure Danny [Etling] knew that I believed in him. I think it’s important that the quarterback knows that the head coach and the coordinators believe in him,” he said. Orgeron hopes that both Narcisse and Brennan will get chances this season.

During yesterday’s presser, LSU offensive coordinator Matt Canada said that since Etling underwent his surgery in April, he’s had “more velocity” on his throws. The staff has seen a more mobile, healthy and confident Etling during fall practices.

After entering for Brandon Harris in 2016, Etling threw for 4613 yards and 27 touchdowns.
