John Battle, a key part of that defensive unit, has been granted another year of eligibility in Baton Rouge.

Battle’s status has been changed from a senior to a redshirt junior, extending his college career to one more year. The NCAA granted the fifth year due to his injury-riddled freshman season in 2014, according to a team spokesman.

“First I heard of it. That’s great,” commented Orgeron to local reporters.

Battle should expect to be a full-time starter for the first time in 2017. Battle filled in for Rickey Jefferson in 2016, who injured himself to start the season in the opening game against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field.

The redshirt junior will be a key contributor in his new leadership role, especially with the departures of Jamal Adams and Tre’Davious White to the NFL.
