LSU ended Oregon State’s 23-game win streak on Friday with a 3-1 victory over the No.1 ranked Beavers. Senior pitcher Alex Lange was locked in, throwing 8 masterful innings, handing off the ball to Zack Hess, the freshman closer who has struck out 8 of his last 9 batters, and is seemingly untouchable.
LSU’s offense came from the hands of Josh Smith, who belted a solo-homer in the top of the seventh and an RBI-single in the top of the second. Smith finished the day with two key RBIs and the bulk of the LSU offense. The Tigers also got major production from freshman center fielder Zack Watson, who went 3-3 on Friday. Watson continues to be LSU’s most consistent hitter in the College World Series.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Alex Lange handed the ball to freshman phenom Zack Hess, who came in and did his job once again. Hess completed the 5 out save, capturing a season-saving win for the Tigers in Omaha.
Update: The Tigers will face Oregon State again tomorrow at 3 p.m. on ESPN. Caleb Gilbert will be on the mound for LSU. The winner advances to the College World Series championship series.
